Mermaids Exist By: Lisa Kettell

Mermaids Do Exist! 8

Here is a scrapbook/mixed media layout I made called: Mermaids Do Exist! It was inspired by the turn of the century exploration, seaside adventures, the Fiji Mermaid, and the question: Do Mermaids Exist. This is fun scrapbook layout with a mixed media/altered art
approach. Hope you enjoy!

Mermaids Do Exist!11

Mermaids Do Exist! 10

-Medium sized Globe Bubble, Globecraft Memories
 -Scrapbook Papers, variety
 -Vintage images of choice
 -Pigment Ink, Colorbox
 -Mixed media ink, Colorbox
-Acrylic paints: aqua, brown, beige, white
-Pigment powders: copper, gold, patina
-Shimmerz molten metal, Shimmerz
 - Glitter: glass glitter: brown, clear and silver
-Doll parts, Painted Bailey Head, Lisa Kettell Designs
-Tools: scissors, decorative scissors, hot glue gun, pencil
-Glues: hot glue, modge podge, tacky glue
-Other: ribbons, mica flakes, jewelry components, clock/gear punches, chipboard lettering, floral wire, tiny light bulbs

 Mermaids Do Exist! 9

 1. Place scrapbook paper of choice onto flat surface, this will be your base.
2. With a pencil, draw a free hand mermaid fin. (See photos for drawing inspiration)
3. Next choose a scrapbook paper with details for the mermaid fin, then cut out 1 inch strips using decorative scissors, start layering inside the drawn fin, glue in place with hot glue, set aside.
 4. With another piece of scrapbook paper, trace the width of the medium sized globe onto it. Now start building a seaside scene inside of it with more paper, vintage images and embellishments.
 5. Center the assembled globe layout at the tip of the mermaid’s waist, glue in place with hot glue, attach globe with tacky glue.
 6. Now draw in the rest of the mermaid and paint with beige paint, distress with mixed media ink pads, then distress the rest of the outer layout with more of the mixed media paint pads.
7. Build the character of the fin with a mixture of mixed media paint pads, ink pads, modge podge, pearls, shimmers and embossing glitters.
8. Apply a coat of modge podge over the mermaid’s body, coat with clear glass glitter.
 9. Start embellishing your layout with a floral wire banner, paper rosettes, shells, more vintage images, cut out piccolo pieces, and glitter.

Mermaids Do Exist! 5Mermaids Do Exist! 4Mermaids Do Exist! 3Mermaids Do Exist! 2Mermaids Do Exist!

-When using hot glue, be extra careful -If you dislike hot glue work with a sturdy glue that works for you. -Create a smaller mermaid or two using the small bubble globes from Globecraft Memories. -In a small plastic disposable bowl, make a mud mix using modge podge, brown paint, glitter and embossing ink, paint onto certain areas of the fin, when dry extra embellish with pearl powders, shimmerz and patina paints. -Make a Mermaid Wall hanging instead of a layout.

Introducing Daniela

We're so excited to welcome papercrafter and instructor Daniela Costa to the Globecraft Memories Design Team!!!!

My name is Daniela Costa and I am so excited to be a part of this fantastic Design Team for GlobeCraft Memories!  I have been crafting for about 7 years, and love to teach, inspire and create!  I love to play with anything crafty and do a lot of mini albums, and altered art projects, but love to make layouts of my wonderful family and children.  I am married and have two children, Bianca who is 18, and Tony who is 6.  I have two dogs, Roxie and Tula.  I live in the Bay Area, California and teach all over the Bay Area and beyond.  You can find out more about me on my blog, The Art Life Shop,

The two projects I am sharing mean so much to me.  The first is of an Altered Tim Holtz Cargo Case.  This is a project that is near and dear to my heart, as Tim featured it on his blog and I have taught this class to lots of inspirational ladies and it meant so much to me.
The second is a Jenni Bowlin Altered cigar box and Mini Album.  This really has been a favorite project of mine.  I love vintage inspired things, and using vintage pictures of my mother and grandmother, so this one is near and dear to my heart as it features my grandmother.

My philosophy in crafting is to not be afraid to try new things, and PLAY!  I think it essential to explore your crafty side and just have fun! I love to document my families life and use pictures of my past, and tell a story.  I scrapbook and make all my projects to inspire others and leave behind memories of our lives for my family.  It also gives me time to be with friends and others that inspire me!  I can't wait to get started with GlobeCraft Memories and to get to know all of you!

Introducing Steph

We're so excited to welcome papercrafter and stamper Steph Ackerman to the Globecraft Memories Design Team!!!!

I am an avid scrapbooker, cardmaker and altered artist. Working with paper is my passion and I have worked with all kinds of mediums since childood.   Cardmaking, for me, is therapy.  I love working on a smaller canvas and watching my work come to life with the use of stamps, inks and die cuts.  I love challenges, and am always trying new techniques.   My day is just not complete if I haven't spent some time in my studio.  I do tend to get lost in my creations, working on lots of different projects at the same time.

I discovered not too long ago that I love to teach and I can often be found in my studio showing students how to create amazing projects using a variety of products, whether it be the Cricut, stamps, inks, binding equipment, etc. I love seeing the look on a student's face when she realizes what can be done with the tools and supplies that are available.

I live in New York with Gary, my husband of 32 years, our 17 year old son Christopher, and our puppy Paulie. Being the teenager that he is, it can be quite difficult getting candid shots of Christopher; however, since he participates in all kinds of sports, I get to take lots of action photos and scrap those. Paulie, on the other hand, is quite the character and allows me to take as many photos as I want without complaint; he can be seen in many scrapbook layouts!

Introducing Ryann!

We're so excited to welcome Ryann Salamon to the Globecraft Memories Design Team!!!!

Hello!  My name is Ryann (pronounced like Ryan) and I live in sunny San Diego, California with my husband of five years and 2 cats, Parker and Posey.  I started papercrafting over four years ago and just recently started teaching classes.  I've been on a few design teams over the years and am regularly published in papercrafting magazines.

Creative Outlook:   I am primarily a Clean and Simple (CAS) card maker but will play around with other types of projects from time to time.  I find myself drawn to simple patterns, bright colors and I love "white space".  When creating I make a point not to fill the entire canvas with product and try to achieve maximum effect with minimal product.

The heart....and NOTHING is more beautiful than something that is made with love. It is ART and it's all beautiful to me.

Introducing Lisa

We're beyond elated to welcome jeweler and mixed media artist Lisa Kettell to the Globecraft Memories team!

I’m a mixed media designer with several years of experience in various degrees of art and design. My book, Altered Art Circus, Quarry Books, is dedicated to my love of recycle, everything we see and own has an endless supply of uses, my job is to navigate one’s thought process into seeing this. One man’s trash is definitely one man’s treasure, a philosophy I engage in every aspect of my life including my store front, Piddlestixs, located in a turn of the century former theater where creating vignettes and displays is done on a budget through finds at thrift stores, rummage sales, curbside, dumpster diving and recycling. I am known as queen of the re-purpose process, and laugh over Sanford and Son.
My works have been published over 100 times worldwide, I am the creator behind the Lisa Kettell Designs Line, the Piddlestixs series of Magazines, and  how to videos.  I teach workshops in various locales from Museums to my store Piddlestixs, located in Lafayette, NJ, where I can create within my enchanted environment.

I'm an artist who believes in serendipity, accidental chances especially when it comes to my works. Some of the best pieces I created were out of a mistake or accident, nothing I do is plain or ordinary, you never know what is going to come out of my imagination when I take on a project, even I don't.

I'm a visionary who see's the gold in found objects, if its discarded or forgotten I'm going to love it and treasure it, and give it a new story, every piece I create tells a story based on some fact, some fiction and brought to life for all to enjoy.

My approach to art is out of the norm, I pick an unusual theme, and just run with it, I never follow straight lines, I mix colors, patterns and materials.

If you want to set your own style never copy another artist's style, be inspired by it, but find your niche which will separate you from the rest and make your work your own!

Introducing Linda...

We're thrilled to welcome mixed media & papercrafting artist Linda Neff to the Globecraft Memories team!

I discovered through my first attempt at scrapbooking I could create art – my way. With rubber stamps, inks, paints, paper, fabric and other mediums, I create a soft, vintage look that is sometimes natural and sometimes a bit more romantic, but always evolving. I enjoy making mini albums, scrapbook pages and wall art to capture my little scrapped treasures.

The mother of three adult children, I live with my retired husband in Michigan and spend my time teaching classes at independent scrapbook and quilt stores. I am Ranger certified and always on the lookout for new techniques. I encourage others to dive head-first into the art of papercrafting, whether it be scrapbooking, stamping or altered art.

On my very first night of scrapbooking I used extra photos to cut letters for my page title rather than use store-bought sticker letters. That’s when I discovered there were no rules in this new hobby of mine.

My art form has evolved tremendously in the past 10 years. I rarely scrapbook a page nowadays, though I keep vowing to get back to it. I prefer projects and most of those tend to be mini books. My art is nearly always inspired by heritage, nature or garden photos. I find it challenging to create without a photo for inspiration. Photos evoke cherished memories for me, whether it be heritage photos of past generations, a quiet walk through the woods or beautiful gardens I visit during summer months.

I’ve often felt my photos speak to me and guide me through paper selection, colors, mediums and more. My embellishments are usually handmade rather than store-bought, though would be less expensive as store-bought; I have tons of products in my room to create a cute little flower or chipboard heart!

My art really shines in “The Gardenista’s Almanac.” It’s the culmination of my love of earthy colors, rustic embellishments and all things Tim Holtz and Wendy Vecchi. The project was in the formulation stages for nearly two years just waiting for the right inspiration to come along; then came 7 Gpysies’ Conservatory line.

Another favorite of mine are my cd mini books. They’re always a favorite of my students. I teach this class at least twice a year; always a different version with new techniques, papers and products. It’s a great class that tosses in a bit of technique, room for photos and it makes a great little gift or keepsake.

I recently experimented with fabric as well. I dyed the fabric and used the sewing machine to stitch, made fabric roses and printed photos on fabric paper. I enjoy experimenting with new techniques and mediums but find I always, always, always incorporate my Ranger products. I’m looking forward to the challenges of using Globecraft Memories’ products with my everyday favorites.

Introducing Allie

We're thrilled to welcome jeweler and all-around fab crafter Allie Gower to the Globecraft Memories team!

Allie is a paper crafter, mixed media artist, jewelry designer. For Allie, creativity has always been a part of life. She loves to design projects for manufacturers, do make and takes and classes for scrapbookers and bead enthusiasts. She is a fledling foodie, and often has something baking or bubbling over while she's crafting. Allie has been featured in craft magazines like Just Steampunk and Bead Trends and recently contributed to a book for Beadalon. Allie is pleased to design for Buttons Galore, Globecraft Memories, Momenta, Stampavie, and Want2Scrap and was recently made a Designer Member of the Craft and Hobby Association (CHA). When Allie isn't creating or baking, she's blogging for Charity Wings, and writing Arts and Crafts articles for the Minneapolis Examiner, or making samples for Dollar Scrapbooking and Technique Junkies.

I'm "mad" about Alice, and I love remaking items to store all my crafty treasures - these projects show my love for all things"Alice".

Everybody is creative. Not everybody realizes this. Creativity is about setting aside a fear of imperfection, and embracing inspiration, really allowing something that excites your senses, and letting it overcome you. Once you're okay with any outcome relating to your art, good or bad, you can really enjoy the process. I enjoy creating, experimenting, and sharing what I've learned. I like re-decorating storage pieces and altering things like boxes, journals, frames, etc. and making invitations and custom pieces for parties and other fun, themed events.

I look forward to working with Globecraft Memories and the team with this amazing opportunity!

Introducing Stacy

We're so excited to welcome Stacy Rodriguez to the Globecraft Memories Design Team!!!!

I'm a girl from the midwest where I have lived my entire life.  I have been with hubby for what seems like forever and we have a wonderful daughter who keeps us very busy with school activites.  I simply can't go one day without a cup of coffee (or 3 or 4 cups), and of course my daily Dr. Pepper! You will always find one of these items next to me in my studio.  I have been scrapbooking for about 10 years now and love every minute of it.  Aside from the fact that i'm creating memories for my daughter to cherish when she gets older and share with her own family someday, I love all of the new people I am always getting to meet.

My favorite thing right this very minute that I love to create is a toss up between altered projects and mini albums.  Of course I throw a layout, card, or tag in at least 4 or 5 times a month, but I always have one mini album going at all times.  I love trying new products and techniques and i'm happy to share with anyone how I have created something.  I would say I don't really have a certain "style" it is just whatever i'm feeling at the time.

I'm super excited to be part of the GlobeCraft Memories team and look forward to sharing my creations with you.
